Celebrating 100 Days Alcohol-Free: Milestones, Challenges, and What to Expect | SoberSixty

Embarking on the journey to sobriety is an incredible feat, marked by numerous milestones, challenges, and moments of personal growth. For many individuals striving to change their relationship with alcohol reaching the 100-day mark of sobriety represents a significant achievement. It's a testament to their resilience, determination, and commitment to reclaiming control of their lives. In this post, Tony Worsdall, founder of Sober Sixty and himself over 4 years alcohol free explores the milestones, challenges, and what to expect at 100 days alcohol-free.

My own journey to sobriety has been a long one, and after many periods of sobriety, I took my last alcoholic drink on 6th January 2020. Although over 4 years ago, I still remember reaching the 100 day milestone and acknowledging that 'this time it's different'. Here are some of the things I remember, with a few of my clients and colleagues experiences thrown in for good measure.

Milestones:

Every step taken towards sobriety is a milestone worth celebrating, and reaching 100 days alcohol-free is a remarkable accomplishment. Here are some key milestones that individuals may experience along the way:

The Decision to Change: The first milestone begins with acknowledging the need for change and making the courageous decision to pursue sobriety. This step often involves confronting deep-rooted emotions, fears, and habits associated with alcohol consumption. Although I was not aware of the 'issues' I would end up addressing, my first step was to tell someone of my decision. Being accountable to someone other than myself was a major first step.

Early Days of Sobriety: The initial days and weeks of sobriety are filled with both triumphs and challenges. Each day abstained from alcohol is a victory, demonstrating strength and resilience in the face of temptation and withdrawal symptoms. Having had periods of sobriety before, these early days weren't that difficult for me, but it can be different for everyone. Celebrate each days achievements.

Physical and Mental Health Improvements: As time progresses, individuals may start to notice significant improvements in their physical and mental well-being. Clearer skin, better sleep, increased energy levels, and improved cognitive function are just a few of the positive changes that often accompany sobriety. For me this meant a return to the gym on a daily basis, a habit I have had for many years, but instead of working off a hangover, I found new physical and mental energy.

Rebuilding Relationships: Sobriety provides an opportunity to mend fractured relationships and rebuild trust with loved ones. As individuals demonstrate their commitment to sobriety through their actions, they may find that their connections with family and friends deepen and strengthen over time. At the 100 day mark, I didn’t think I had much work to do on this, but as time passed, I realised that my family and loved ones had not been getting the 'best me' and that became an important issue to address for me.

Personal Growth and Self-Discovery: Sobriety is not just about abstaining from alcohol; it's also a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. Individuals may rediscover their passions, talents, and aspirations, paving the way for a more fulfilling and purpose-driven life. I started to discover the real me and who I was meant to be. 50 years of using alcohol to numb out all of the 'tricky stuff' was coming to an end and I was rediscovering some of the things I used to find joy in.

Challenges:

While the journey to 100 days alcohol-free is filled with numerous triumphs, it's essential to acknowledge the challenges that individuals may encounter along the way:

Cravings and Temptations: The urge to drink may persist long after the decision to become sober is made. Cravings and temptations can be particularly intense during social gatherings, holidays, or times of stress, requiring individuals to develop coping strategies to navigate these triggers effectively.

Emotional Rollercoaster: Sobriety often brings to the surface a range of emotions that may have been suppressed by alcohol. From anxiety and depression to anger and frustration, individuals may experience a rollercoaster of feelings as they learn to cope with life's ups and downs without relying on alcohol as a crutch.

Social Pressure: In a society where alcohol consumption is often normalised and even encouraged, individuals may face social pressure to drink, especially in social settings. Learning to assert boundaries, communicate effectively, and preparing for the event are essential strategies for navigating social situations while maintaining sobriety.

Self-Doubt and Relapse Risk: Moments of self-doubt and uncertainty are natural parts of the journey to sobriety. It's crucial for individuals to recognise that setbacks may occur but that relapse does not negate their progress or their ability to continue moving forward on the path to recovery.
